Mr. & Mrs. Wall Art

Friday, September 6, 2013 -

I've shared before that my husband works as a Framer for a living. Occasionally, when they are doing a remodel, he gets to take home some of the leftovers. He has started to learn my taste. A couple years ago, he brought me home this laminate cabinet door.

I loved it right away, but wasn't sure what to do with it. So it has sat in a dark corner of my room for 2 years. Finally, I looked at it one day and made up my mind. It was going over my bed.

*If you don't have an old door, you can still create a similar look with a  painted piece of MDF and some narrow moulding. I have actually seen pre-fab moulding panels like these, with the coved corners, but can't seem to find them right now. If any of you know a source, please let me know in the comments.

For my door, I started by mixing up some of the wall color with some Simply White to tone down the color and make it stick better to the laminate. Using Frog tape, I created lines and filled them in with my custom paint.

I traced a platter twice on a scrap piece of veneer, creating 2 ovals. I then cut them out with my cursed jigsaw.

I typed up "Mr. and Mrs." using word, then went to Staples to have them enlarged and printed in reverse. I then used to same ModPodge transfer technique I used on my Blue Hope Chest to apply the typography to the ovals.

After that, I attacked the ovals to the cabinet door with Liquid Nails, and ta-da! I now have wall art over my bed and the whole thing cost me $0.54 for the two copies to be made.

I'm really happy with the way it turned out. I thought I would hang it, but when I set it on top of the headboard, I liked how casual it looked. What do you think? It's heavier than heck, but I'm sure I could get it up on the wall.

  1. So so cute! It makes me feel better that you had it hiding in a corner for two years before you decided what to do with it! It gives me hope! I love how you made the copies and printed them in reverse, awesome!

  2. That is perfect! Although, for me, I think instead of Mrs., mine would say, "Sweetie." And instead of Mr., it would say, "Turd."

  13. great use of an item that would have gone to the landfill! if i were you, i would attach it to the wall securely. you said it was heavy, and i would hate to see it slip and hit you two in the head!
