How to build an 8 foot long modern rustic console table or buffet from off the shelf lumber

My sister Emily is awesome. Her awesome husband recently retired from the Air Force after twenty years of service, and like many military families, they have made huge sacrifices and have moved all over the world. It's been years since their family had a house they could call their own. They finally have been able to buy a gorgeous new home and settle down close to me.

Her style is pretty different from mine. She has the Farmhouse/Traditional vibe in her house. If you've followed me for any length of time you know I'm more of a modern/ mid-century girl. So when we discussed building her a console table, we had to come up with a design that would make both of us happy. I used the Bin Pull Console from West Elm as a jumping off point.

All the rooms in Emily's house are massive. A normal sized piece of furniture would look dwarfed on her 10' walls, so I designed the table to be just over 8' long.

To satisfy the "Rustic" component, I distressed the heck out of my boards and gave them my Textured Raised Grain technique

To make my heart sing and to add a modern touch, I sanded the rectangular legs smooth and painted them to mimic steel.

No one can have enough storage! I wasn't originally going to include drawers in my design, but I'm so glad I did. They will come in handy for sure!

The great thing about console tables is that you can use them almost anywhere. We had it set up in her dining room, but we talked about moving it to the living room and turning it into a sofa table. I could totally see it used as an entertainment center too. Those drawers would be nice to hide electronics.

There is still time to decorate before the holidays. Ready to build your own? I'm sharing the full, free building plans over at BuildSomething.com. Like this idea? Pin the image below to save for later.

  1. Just came across this from the Kreg site......looks great! I don't see where the finish information has been discussed. Can you comment on the finish color details of the legs and top, drawers colors? As I love the contrast and would like to duplicate. Thanks
