DIY Fluted Concrete Table + Tips I Learned From Screwing Up Twice

Thursday, October 19, 2023 -

I needed a little table to fit between a pair of chairs in our primary bedroom. I couldn't find exactly what I wanted, and I had a few bags of extra concrete laying around from installing our Horizontal Wood Fence, so I decided to make my own.

How to Make Almost Any Lamp Cordless

This project is something that literally has been in the works for about 5 years. Back when we were living in our previous house, I had a live edge console table behind the sofa that I used as a computer desk. The first evening I attempted to get some work done, I discovered I really needed some extra lighting. I went online to buy a cordless desk lamp and was absolutely shocked at what I found (or didn't find).

The only options that were available for purchase were small, cheap looking portable lights (not really a true table lamp) or I found one company called Modern Lantern, which makes traditional, but decent looking lamps that start at $385! Are you kidding?! There was no way on Earth I'd every spend $400-500 for a single table lamp. Additionally, I liked the idea of being able to pick the best lamp to fit the design of the space, not just the only one I could find. I began experimenting with DIY, rechargeable cordless lamp options.

Over the years, I've bought multiple battery packs and special light bulbs, trying to figure out the best option. Safety and longevity were my biggest concerns. I found multiple ways to easily provide battery power to a lamp, but some would only run a bulb for as little as half an hour. For a real solution to be an option, I wanted a lamp to be able to power a standard, E26 base light bulb, every night for at least 5 days.

Like I'm assuming many of you do, I love making handmade holiday gifts for my friends and family. Last year I made several wood candy machines and the year before that was easy DIY mancala game boards

This year, I found some gorgeous 3/4" x 3/4" hardwood square dowels / rods at my Home Depot. They were only labeled as "hardwood" and didn't differentiate between the species of wood. A group of darker colored, redish rods caught my eye and I was pretty sure they were mahogany.

It's hard when your best friend lives on the opposite side of the country. But when your best friend is an insanely talented DIY blogger and YouTuber, you find excuses to go see her for a "collaboration". Somehow, this is actually the second collab Sam From DIY Huntress and I partnered on this summer. The first was that segmented round coffee table Foureyes Furniture helped us build.

While I was on the east coast last month, Sam and I took a road trip down to Philadelphia to learn from woodshop master/ best teacher ever - Erik Curtis. Erik took Sam and I under his wing and showed us some more advanced woodworking techniques. We learned SO MUCH! It was awesome. All three of us created our own version of the same project, which I'll be sharing in a few weeks. So keep an eye out!

Remember 2013 and how everyone had to have a tufted headboard? That was back when I was building custom furniture for other people and I got a lot of practice making them. I wrote a Easy Tufting Tutorial years ago (I was a baby blogger back then. Don't judge the horrible photography!) but figured it was time to finally publish a video.

Even though styles seem to be moving more into contemporary waves, I think tufting is classic and still has a place. I built a simple, modern upholstered bench from some leftover plywood and was able to incorporate a tufted cushion. Check out the video below for the full process or to see the pretty photos and get more info, keep scrolling.

What's better than hanging out with your best friend? Hanging out with your best friend, going on a road trip, and being able to create something awesome together!

A couple weeks ago, Sam from DIY Huntress came to visit me here in Arizona. The next morning, we loaded up the truck and drive to Whittier, California to meet up with our buddy Chris from Foureyes Furniture (if you follow me on Instagram, you got a sneak peak of some of the shenanigans). Chris is a pretty big deal in the YouTube woodworking community and I've been dying to get to work with him. He build some of the most stunning modern furniture and was kind enough to open his shop for a fun collaboration!

I get some crazy ideas from time to time. Like that one time I decided to pour epoxy resin over OSB sheathing and turn it into a dresser. Experiments are awesome things happen! Think about it, the first time a S'more was invented I bet someone in the room was thinking "you're going to stick that marshmallow where?". I've been itching to try two new techniques lately and finally thought up a cool idea to test them on.

I've seen a few examples of bleached hardwood and knew that was a game I wanted in on. *Spoiler alert: it's ridiculously cool! I also have wanted to try my hand at drilling holes in glass. I know that sounds terrifying, but people do it all the time and after cutting the glass myself for my stacked cabinet kitchen remodel, I've discovered glass isn't nearly as intimidating as I once thought.

I know we bloggers get a little carried away with the whole holiday planning thing, but we are solidly in November now and if you plan on building gifts, that takes a little while. It's time to get started. Last year I made easy Mancala game boards for my siblings, but I think my idea for this year is even better and I partnered with BuildSomething.com to make it happen.

Two words: Candy Dispenser.

Holy cow, it's November!!! This year is going way too fast. I can't believe we need to start thinking about Christmas stuff. I'll be honest, I'm not the best at decorating for the holidays. I put out a few things, but I just don't have time to go all out. I love small and simple holiday decorations that can be stored and set-up easily.

Even though we're only 4 weeks away from December, I've got a SUPER simple project for you. You can make an adorable house shaped advent calendar in just a couple hours! I'm sharing the whole build over at BuildSomething.com

About a month ago I published a video for my Double Ended flip-top workbench and you guys have been AMAZING! Thank you! The response has been really great. Apparently, you guys love shop builds.

In the video, I mentioned I'd be releasing the follow-up video for the outfeed rollers that I paired with my new Ridgid 13" Thickness planer. Well, life got crazy and I ended up going to Japan for 8 days! (yes, it was unbelievable). So, I'm finally sharing the whole build, including free plans for you to build your own outfeed roller system.

I love Halloween. I was one of those weird kids who had their costume picked out in June. Halloween was always my favorite holiday. A couple years ago we went nuts decorating our front porch in a graveyard theme, and we've kinda stuck with it every year since then.

diy how to build wood counter top countertop towel ring bar holder

*This post is sponsored by The Home Depot. I have been compensated for my time and provided with product or payment in exchange. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links.

Remember my master bathroom remodel that I was working on forever? After installing the double vanity, I realized I had no where to mount a hand towel ring. I don't want to drill into the tiled walls, so that left me with a countertop option.

After searching, I found a stainless steel towel holder a few months back. Honestly, it's was total garbage. It was expensive (like $27), not tall enough for a standard towel, and fell over easily. I decided I could make a weighted hand towel holder from wood, cheaper and with good design.

It's good to try new things. I love experimenting with new materials, even if it doesn't always work out. I'd been itching to play around with gold leaf and I finally had a project that was a perfect test.

I have a confession: I am chronically late... to EVERYTHING!

My husband kindly suggested I make myself a wall clock to keep in the bathroom so I can hopefully stay a little more on schedule (nice try babe). I've actually never made a DIY clock yet, so I took him up on his suggestion and decided to incorporate that gold leaf strategy.

How to make a simple Quirky wood block game using scrap wood and a POTATO

*This post is sponsored by The Home Depot. I have been compensated for my time and provided with product or payment in exchange. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links.

I've told you guys before about my grandpa. He was a woodworker and made the most beautiful things. One of my favorite projects of his were these little wooden tic-tac-toe boards he made for all of his grand kids. I still have my set and one I stole from a sibling.

There is something so nostalgic and sweet about handmade games. Paper pieces and store bought kits just don't last. That was the motivation when I made simple Mancala game boards for Christmas gifts last year and a desktop football goal for Father's Day the year before that. So, today I'm back making another DIY wooden game, this time for my twin boys.

Brave new waters for me people. You may have noticed my tutorials can get pretty lengthy. Partly because my techniques can be a little complicated, but mostly, I am anal and like to over explain. I've decided videos might be the way to go.

Make your own DIY chandelier using inexpensive craft foam

I'm a great boy mom. Despite the fact that I am a licensed hairstylist and have been known to sport 6" heels from time to time, I'm really not a girly-girl. When it comes to raising kids, I do much better with mudpies and monsters than glitter and emotions.

Are kitchen canisters still cool? Whether they are or not, I have a hand-me-down set we received seven years ago, when we got married. I decided my kitchen might look a little cooler if I introduced some concrete to the mix.

Foam is Expensive... Here's my Secret

Wednesday, January 9, 2013 -
I recently added a brag post to Ana White's Website and I made me realize that I need to share my upholstery foam secret.

When I was building my upholstered benches for the boutique I knew I wanted thick, dense foam for the cousions. The problem with that is I was going to resell the benches so I really needed to keep my costs down so I could make a profit. All of a sudden a light bulb clicked on in my head. Crib mattresses!

I happened to have two, all-foam, sealed in the plastic crib mattresses sitting in my guest room. I stripped the plastic and liners off and checked them out. It was perfect! 5 inches thick, super dense foam.
