Easy Built-In Bookcases

Friday, June 13, 2014 -

Remember when I talked about my good friend Maegan and her amazing entertainment console? Well, she and her adorable husband bought their first home last year and wasted no time starting the upgrades.

The home had a formal living room which Maeg decided was totally unnecessary in a small-ish sized house. Her husband is a MD/PHD student, so they decided their space would be much better used as an office.

She was browsing through her local ReStore, when she found 4 matching, glass-front cabinets, similar to these.

Then, after a little looking, she found 4 bookshelves.

The cabinets and shelves were all primed and painted white and Maegan began the installation. Here's how it looked "during". The bookshelves were screwed to the wall, and the cabinets to the bookshelves.

I'll once again profess my love for this entire family! Looking at this picture of Maeg's dad and little brother puts a big smile on my face. While her family was in town, they all worked together to add decorative moulding between the cabinets and shelves, as well as adding crown moulding to finish the top.

Ready to see the end result?! Once again, the before...

And after.

Isn't it beautiful? Amazing how white paint and moulding can make almost anything look great isn't it?

Not only is it pretty, but this wall of built-ins not provides TONS of storage. That comes in pretty handy when you have as many textbooks as Maegan and her husband do.

What do you think? Pretty awesome huh? I have such cool friends.

  1. Wow! I want to be friends with these people too! This is a fantastic idea and it looks so professional. I'm pinning for future reference as we will be moving soon and I'd love something like this for my own work area. Wasn't she lucky to find cabinets that fit the wall area so perfectly?
    Thanks for sharing,

    1. Thanks Patricia! Try looking on your local craigslist. Fortunately, most cabinets come in standard sizes, so find a width that gets you almost where you want, and the rest you can fill in with additional boards and trim. Good luck!

  2. The finished wall is wonderful, and it's astonishing she found four of each cabinets and book cases that just so happened to fit each other, as well as the wall she used them on! WOW.

    1. I agree, she scored big time! They weren't perfect, but thankfully that's where decorative trim and caulk come in.

  5. I'd love to have this kind of bookcases to me, too - but unfortunately I do not have such skills and my hubby haven't inspired to do. This is so practical!

  15. It's amazing. Restore can be great for stuff that was perfectly good, that someone removed when they decided to remodel.
