I know building outdoor furniture in September may sound crazy to you, but here in the desert, our weather is just starting to get nice. In fact, its a bit too warm for my taste during the day, but the evenings have started to cool down a little, which means it's time for grilling and entertaining outdoors again. Even though I built us a cool wood and glass outdoor table a couple years ago, we've never really had someone comfortable to sit on the patio. I figured it was time to build a outdoor sofa / couch, but I had a couple requirements.
Let's think about it. Patio sofas are great, but what are the downsides? The cushions are ALWAYS dirty. No one wants to sit on dusty, or wet upholstery. Also, have you ever had an unexpected wind storm sweep in the blow your cushions into the pool? When I started to sketch up the sofa design, I knew it had to involve some hidden storage for the cushions and pillows.

For most DIYers, their bread and butter tools are a cordless drill and impact driver combo kit. I've tried combo kits from most of the major tool brands, but I was super excited to try out the new Atomic Compact Brushless Drill and Impact driver from DeWalt.
The Atomic series is lighter and smaller than the other DeWalt 20v tools. Both the impact driver and drill come with powerful brushless motors which pack 1,700 lbs of torque. I put them through the paces when building the sofa, and they kept up with no trouble.
Since the sofa and storage trundle were both joined with screws (about 200 of them!), having strong driver bits was essential.

Have you ever shopped for seat cushions? Dang, they are expensive! If I'm going to spend a couple hundred dollars on fabric and foam, I better have a safe place to store them. Being able to stash the cushions and pillows inside the hidden compartments is SOOOO convenient. No more dusty cushions!
While we're talking talking about cushions, here's a link to the ones I used. I found them at a At Home store.
There is so much storage, there's actually room for a little surprise!
I picked up a couple narrow plastic garbage cans with handles, which function as really handy ice chests. They fit perfectly in each of the arm rest compartments.
You can grab a cold drink without having to leave your seat.
Remember when I built glass-topped outdoor table? It's still going strong and looking beautiful. The redwood has held up so well, I decided to use it again on the sofa. If you can't find redwood easily where you live, cedar would be a great alternative.
