Holy cow, it's November!!! This year is going way too fast. I can't believe we need to start thinking about Christmas stuff. I'll be honest, I'm not the best at decorating for the holidays. I put out a few things, but I just don't have time to go all out. I love small and simple holiday decorations that can be stored and set-up easily.

Even though we're only 4 weeks away from December, I've got a SUPER simple project for you. You can make an adorable house shaped advent calendar in just a couple hours! I'm sharing the whole build over at BuildSomething.com

It's a really simple idea. Just a cute, house shaped board with 25 holes drilled into it. To help with alignment, I used a Kreg Shelf Pin Jig. By the way, if you ever build projects with removable shelves, I HIGHLY recommend buying one.

The design is easy to modify. Don't like walnut and white? No problem. You can use any color scheme you like. The minimalist house design was easy enough to draw with just a paint pen and ruler. No special vinyl cutter needed.

I also thought it might be super cute to make a personalized calendar for each kid so they both get to move the peg everyday.

I originally thought about gluing a snowflake to the 1/4" dowel that gets inserted into the correct hole everyday. I liked the idea of a really stripped down, minimal look. Instead, I decided to pair a simple round off-cut with the dowel to create a really simple peg. And gloss red paint makes anything fancy.

If you haven't ever used an advent calendar before, they are a super old but fun tradition. Basically, you have a spot to indicate each date in December, leading up to Christmas Day. Some have candy or treats distributed each day, but the fun for most advent calendars comes from just moving the indicator.

I remember being a little girl and we had a felt board calendar. One of the benefits of being the youngest child, all my older siblings we too old and cool, so I got to place the new shape on the board everyday.

This is a great project for a beginner! And a good option if you are wanting to work with a more expensive wood but don't want to shill out the big bucks to use it on a large project. Just look at that walnut!
